The Biomedical Approach to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) with Hyperactivity (ADHD) is primarily a way of viewing these disorders, rather than a standardized approach. It looks at the individual in a global manner and with a functional vision of the symptoms manifested. It is an individualized approach that focuses on the underlying metabolic and systemic dysfunctions specific to each person, beyond conventional diagnosis. The objective of this approach is to identify substances and factors that may be in excess or deficient in the person, and to correct them. All of this is based on an in-depth questionnaire, interviews, a naturopathic examination and functional tests. Various measures to restore homeostasis are then proposed.
Each practitioner offers his clients a unique approach reflecting their training and skills. Chantal Ann Dumas, ND.A. draws on her vast naturopathic knowledge but she also incorporates various elements from functional medicine and others that she has acquired over the course of various autism trainings completed in the United States (Defeat Autism Now! and Autism one). Her recommendations include dietary and lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies, etc.
N.B.: The biomedical approach is not considered to be a conventional treatment for ASD and other developmental disorders. However, it can prove to be beneficial in correcting the metabolic imbalances typically present in this clientele. The return to homeostasis is usually accompanied by improvements in cognitive, behavioral and mood.
